What Is HEIC?
HEIC explained: containers, compression, Apple devices, compatibility and when conversion is useful.
HEIC is an image container format commonly associated with Apple devices. It can store high-quality photographs efficiently, which can help reduce storage use compared with some older formats.

Why do iPhones use HEIC?
Apple adopted HEIF-based image storage because it can provide efficient compression while retaining useful image information. The exact file extension you see is often .heic.
Why can HEIC cause compatibility problems?
Modern operating systems and applications may support HEIC, but support is not universal. A website upload form, older editor, or document workflow may expect JPG or PNG instead.
When should you convert HEIC?
Convert when the destination does not accept HEIC, when you need broad compatibility, or when a workflow explicitly asks for JPG or PNG. If the destination supports HEIC and storage efficiency matters, keeping the original can be reasonable.
HEIC is not the same as JPG
HEIC and JPG use different encoding approaches. Converting between them creates a new encoded image; it does not simply rename the file extension.
