How to Compress an Image

Learn how image compression works and how to choose quality settings.

Image compression reduces the number of bytes needed to store an image. The best settings depend on whether you are optimizing a photograph, screenshot, graphic or web asset.

Start with the right dimensions

If an image is much larger in pixel dimensions than the destination needs, resizing can reduce file size significantly before compression.

Choose an appropriate format

JPG is common for photographs, PNG is useful for lossless graphics, and WebP can be a useful modern web format.

Adjust quality carefully

Lossy formats let you trade some image information for a smaller file. Lower quality can reduce size, but excessive reduction can create visible artifacts.
